Masc (2022)
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Within LGBTQ+ culture there are many micro-labels in order to express specific identities. Oftentimes, women who present and dress more traditionally masculine identify themselves as “Masc.” This can be confusing to outsiders that see someone who presents as masculine on the outside but has stereotypically feminine qualities on the inside.
I truly didn’t think about this too much until I got to college and realized, as a masc woman myself, I stuck out from the crowd. Adjusting to parts of college culture such as greek-life, football weekends, and general hook-up culture was extremely difficult. Freshman year of college is a learning curve for all students alike, but especially for LGBTQ+ students. It’s hard to find your place when you feel as though you don’t belong in male spaces nor female spaces.
“Masc” shows those feelings of isolation and loneliness that arise when we don’t fit into a community. And although this film portrays the specific experience of being masc, at the end of the day we all want the same thing: community.
